Why are these creatures nearly identical to humans?
Where InkMates came from has always been a mystery to mankind. The mystery extends to many today. Modern InkMates don't really know their roots, only of their species' dark history and equal rights movement. As anthropologists, historians, and the curious delve through their research in the InkMate origins, they quickly found the history is hard, if not harder to come by than mankind's own.
A common question:
"Did InkMates evolve from humans, or did they break off somewhere in the ancestral line?"
Many theories came about. Some stuck while others sunk.
One of the theories that has not yet been proven wrong is that of the "Ancient InkMate." Research through various scriptures, artifacts, and—most importantly—images (paintings and/or photographs) gave key insight into the mystery.
It was thought that InkMates had the same life expectancy of humans, and though it was known some prolonged their life through sexual intercourse, general opinion was that InkMates would die at some given time. There was never definitive proof that an InkMate could prolong their life indefinitely - until a researcher came about with an interesting discovery.
The researcher found writings about a certain InkMate — talked about in detail through centuries of various literary works. Some think it may be the same InkMate that appeared in various paintings and photographs from later centuries. He might have even been alive today, many have suggested. And if that is the case, there was the possibility of more than one "Ancient InkMate." Or even that "Ancient InkMates" could live among us today. Of course it could also be coincidence, or a single example.
Not much funding has been put in the research and advancements of InkMate health, so measuring age for InkMates has not been thoroughly looked at yet. Modern science cannot even begin to try to mandate and test InkMates for their "actual" age, beyond what they state themselves.
However, in recent findings, a new theory has popped up: The “Love Bug Theory" It quickly took the scientific community and media by storm and became the talk amongst many in the modern world.

The research states...
InkMates have existed as furthest back that mankind could remember or rather, they have existed almost as long as humans (humans used loosely - could include ancestors of humans). Evidence shows that InkMates were once humans that had gone through a peculiar evolution through many millennias. The process started when certain groups of humans came across a particular symbiotic parasite. The parasite infected humans, centralizing its location in the brain and nervous system of the body. Symptoms of carrying the parasite weren’t as transparent at first. The parasite would increase the host’s libido greatly and physical strength slightly. The heightened libido came in varying degrees depending on the person. Some might experience a slight enhancement while others may experience excruciating aches for sexual activity. The parasite needed to spread itself through other people and used intercourse to pass on to others. Males were a predominately active carriers of the parasite. Females would become infected but the parasites remained dormant due the difference in chemistry between a female and male. Sometimes a mutation would occur where symptoms of the parasite showed through females but that was a very rare event.
On the topic of mutations, as generations went forward with the parasite. Different strands formed in the passage between humans. The parasite itself, in its raw form, slowly became extinct as the hosts that became infected left the areas where the parasite lived. Humans that lived in the area the parasite was rampant were very rural. Deserted places would not be passed through by other humans any time soon thus the parasites would not find a host or anything formidable to latch onto. The only remainders of the parasites are passed down, generations upon generations, which are more numerous than many would imagine. A good majority of parasites spread far while the notable ones were in close vicinity of each other. For the more rural groups of people where the parasite’s host could not find many humans to procreate with, parasite host to parasite host would combine with each other. As like carriers procreated, the stronger the signs of the parasites showed in the offspring. Those who participated in incestuous activities showed even more mutations from the parasite. The parasite started to penetrate into the DNA of these humans and slowly change their genetic make-up to suit itself. As thousands of generations of parasitic hosts combined, the human form transformed into a devil-like figure. Horns sprouted in different places of the head, one or more tails extended off the once-shedded-trait, the tail bone, nails hardened with the substance that the tails produced: ink. Ink would secrete out of the tail tip. Most of the time it was poisonous other times not. The coloration of human hair color and tongue took a turn. No longer there was regular colors such as black, brown, or blonde. It became easy to tell who wasn’t human anymore.
That's it for now. More will follow as further research comes through. Many anthropologists feel like they are onto something but further testing is needed to look into the InkMate Genome!
