Introduction
Hello everyone! It's sonyaism here with a tutorial going over how to use PayPal. I will be going over features on PayPal to answer questions I have seen asked by many among the artist community. I've seen many things posted on deviantArt, Twitter, and Tumblr that bring awareness to certain features on PayPal that could potentially harm sellers and buyers which in turn has taught me a few things about PayPal. I've read other's experiences and experienced things on my own with PayPal. I've used PayPal for years (probably since 2009) so I've gone through quite a lot of growth with learning how to use this platform.
This tutorial will be going over how to use features but not go through the steps of setting up a PayPal. I feel there are many guides out there with how to get started so I won't go into depth with those steps. I also feel that it may be simple on how to set it up but I understand if it's not so transparent with new users. If you really are stuck with setting up a PayPal, please contact me directly and I can help the best I can.
As stated above, I've been using PayPal for years so this tutorial is a culmination of information I've learned through the years. It will contain not only my own experiences but other's that I have read on to learn from their mistakes. Furthermore, I will input my own personal opinions on certain features which you should take with precaution because it is not factual. I'm laying out everything I believe and it is up to you to figure what works best for you. I have not done extensive research on everything stated here and still learning new features day by day since PayPal does update and change things around. If you feel I have explained something incorrectly, feel free to contact me with your own experience, opinions and facts. Thank you.

Warning: Incoming Bad Attitude Ahead
WHAT IS PAYPAL?
PayPal is a third party service where you can transfer your money (somewhat) reliably between other users. Since it is a third party service, transactions fees are present. There are other third party services to transfer money such as Google Wallet (which I don't use often but it seems there is not a fee involved), an American Express service (I only signed up for a League of Legends debit card and RP), and I bet there are others. Though, PayPal is the most highly used and rated around the world (but berated by artists).
STARTING PAYPAL (BARELY EXPLAINING)
Sadly, I'm not going to go into how to start or set-up a PayPal Account. I'm sure if you search Google or your website you frequent to use PayPal, you'll find what you are looking for. But, a quick tip for starting, you will need a bank account OR credit/debit card to start your account. Having both linked to your account increases your limit of receiving and sending money as well lift "limited/holds" that PayPal may place onto your account. Since these personal and important accounts are being linked, be sure to keep a close eye on your PayPal account. I met people who have been hacked or there have been random charges. Please be wary as a consumer and a seller.
Now, there is a picture below for when you hit "Send & Request." These are all very helpful in paying or receiving payment for things. I will go over them individually as well show other useful tools on PayPal. But before that, I mentioned there are fees that occur in transactions, correct? I'd like to go over that for a moment.

PayPal is a third party service. It's a service meaning you have to, yes, pay something to use it. Payment besides giving someone cold hard cash is going to cost something. Yes, even swiping your credit or debit card costs a business that you go everyday to. You pay nothing but the place or person are you buying from, it costs them something. Buying your groceries at Safeway with a credit card will cost Safeway a fee. Buying clothes from GAP with a debit card will cost GAP to pay something. Though, I see that debit cards may be feeless or the fee is less so most places prefer debit cards instead of credit cards. Also, I'm aware these are big cooperations so it's like chump change to them. Then what about the local businesses that are down the street from you? Where their revenue isn't as big as those I have listed? Or even artists who are doing their businesses properly through PayPal? You don't need to be professional licensed seller to have a business. But you need to have a professional attitude about it.
Please do not pay PayPal Fees nor ask others to pay PayPal Fees for you.
If it's killing you so much that fees are eating you up from the inside out, then raise your prices. You sell your art for $20, sell it for $25 instead. Ballpark it or even use a calculator to round up.
Though, I do not recommend using an actual PayPal Fee calculator to make it the exact price such as $20.91. Yes, you are being open to no hidden fees in your price. I always hated getting noted saying, "Oh the price isn't actually $30, I want you to pay the fee so it is actually $31.20." I'm like, "Um, you didn't state that anywhere in the deviation or journal, so no, I'm paying $30." And I've end up shit out of luck with buying stuff. Tough shit for me right? Poor seller. Boo-hoo.
Anyway, everyone knows that the extra $0.91 is part of the PayPal fee. A weird amount instead of a clean cut amount. Change that to $21 instead! It's suspicious to everyone and most importantly PayPal. PayPal will redflag the shit out of you if you are caught by them. There may be other potential consequences but most importantly, you won't be able to receive money for quite awhile until you are done clearing your issue with them over this fees dispute. That would be the suckiest part, don't you agree? Especially for those who are depending on money for rent, food, and other IRL expenditures.
I will also admit, I used to be those uninformed people who paid fees and asked others to pay fees. Everyone did it so it seemed like a normal thing to do. But as time went on, I read journals and seen others conduct their business, my viewpoint changed. As well as knowing it's fully against the PayPal's User Agreement and paying through "Family and Friends" is potentially hazardous for untrustworthy sellers. Also, for awhile, I never really asked or instructed anyone how to pay me persay. I got a mixture of people paying fees and those who did not. Now, I'm being more proactive with doing invoices and using Paypal.Me so I can protect myself and my buyers. I'm getting more serious about my hobby even if it is just a hobby. I'd like to conduct my business the best way I can. I will never ask you to pay fees for me. So please, do not pay fees. If say $20, just pay $20. I will eat the fees. You, as a buyer, should never have to pay fees.
Again, please do not pay Paypal Fees nor ask others to pay Paypal Fees for you.

Types of Payment Methods
Pay for goods or services
This is the MOST common way of paying. I've seen multiple people use this method and I have as well.
Here are the steps of using this type of payment method through Paypal.
Here are the steps of using this type of payment method through Paypal.
Alright for starters, click the "Pay for Goods an Services."
This method is very secure to protect the buyer, the one sending the money, from potential scams.
It's very crappy protection for the honest sellers that are being chargebacked though.
My skepticism, seen from those who have received chargebacks, is this method is having to manually enter an email address to send money, so anyone can do it even someone who may hack your account. Thus, why I think chargebacks come from this method moreso than others since someone could potentially enter an email address not out of their own volition. Please correct me if someone has received a chargeback from invoicing, Paypal.Me, and other ways.

Next, you gotta enter the email address you will send your money to.
I recommend copying and pasting email addresses due to less error when manually typing.
In the greyed out box, there are speed dial email addresses for those you have paid often.
NEAT!

Okay, enter the money, select currency, type out special instructions/notes, and select an address!
Enter Money Amount
Self-explainatory. Make sure you are entering the correct amount.
DO NOT ENTER EXTRA MONEY TO PAY TRANSACTION FEES.
IT IS AGAINST PAYPAL'S USER AGREEMENT TO MAKE YOUR BUYER PAY THE PAYPAL TRANSACTION FEE.
Select Currency*
Most common taken is USD, but I have had to pay in CAD, AUD, EUR, etc.
I have received out of country currency which was annoying. ; -;''
*IMPORTANT! PayPal has added "Auto Currency Conversion" late 2016.
Refer Further Below on "Auto Currency Conversion."
Special Instructions + Notes
I often like to put my username and what website.
I do buy from dA and TH so I'd like to specify.
Also, specify what I am buying for bookkeeping.
*** Choose Your Address ***
VERY IMPORTANT!
Since you are buying "Digital Goods" Or "Digital Services,"
nothing is being shipped to you.
There have been scams where people used this against artists to get their money back
when in fact, they have been delivered their items or services digitally already!

IMPORTANT! Auto Currency Conversion
Late last year in 2016, PayPal implemented Auto Currency Conversion when you send money.
This happens when you are sending to someone out of your main country.
PayPal will alert you with this prompt when sending to someone outside your main country.
Since I live in the United States, my main currency is the US Dollar.
I am trying to send money to my friend for a commission in the Philippines.
PayPal is prompting me to auto convert into PHL Pesos.
MAKE SURE THE PERSON YOU ARE BUYING FROM WANTS THE CONVERSION.
MOST DO NOT WANT THE CONVERSION.
THEY WANT THEIR PAYMENT STRICTLY IN USD.
As far as I know, I have not found a setting to stop this "Auto Currency Conversion."
You will have to manually input it every time.
PayPal's currency exchange rate may not be optimal for your foreign seller.
Or, the seller does most business in USD and not in their native currency.
There may be many reasons.
PLEASE MAKE SURE THEY WANT THEIR CURRENCY IN USD OR NATIVE CURRENCY.

OOPS! Did you type in the address wrong? Or the seller gave you mistyped address?
This is a SUREFIRE way to know.
If you receive this prompt after entering the information before this step,
go back to the buyer telling them the email address is not working.
Just cancel this step and wait for the correct email to send the money to!

Alright disaster averted!
This is the prompt that will show from typing or pasting in the correct email address.
PayPal knows if the email is a registered email under PayPal.
So now you can pick a payment method.
Pick your bank, CC, or other stuff.
If you have PP Balance and want to pay a different method, it won't work that greatly.
I experienced it paying the seller through eCheck which most sellers do not like.
Be Advised.

send to friends and family in the us
Here is how you "skimp" out on getting charged fees and go against PayPal's User Agreement lol
No, seriously, DO NOT USE this method to cut corners.

Now that we have that out of the way, this method is just as it is labeled.
I use it to lend money to friends who need to buy an adoptable or pay bills.
They will use the same method to pay me back.
But it is free to send to people in the US, since I live in the US.
If you are using a credit card, there is a small fee though.

I've sent money internationally this way, and you will have to pay a small fee.
It beats paying the "Pay for Goods and Services" fee if your friend and/or family
needs some financial help outside the US.
If you are using a credit card to lend or give money abroad,
the fee will be higher because you are using a credit card.

request from anyone
Another protected payment type from Paypal.
I don't use this one often but when I do, I specifically do it for people WITHOUT Paypal accounts.
PayPal still accepts major credit card/debit card payments.
So for my clientele that only have a credit card/debit card without Paypal,
I have them pay through this way.
Some people don't want to deal with owning a Paypal.
Or some people using their parents credit cards or debit cards.
I can't tell much more about this feature but this.
If you have questions on this feature, I am happy to try to help you figure it out.

create an invoice
Frequently used and recommended for those who take their art a bit more seriously,
but, also, receiving more hefty payments such as $50 or more. Basically, higher amounts than $10.
Also, you can guarantee what currency you are receiving.
AND your customer can't input more money to cover PayPal fees for you.
HALLE-FUCKING-LUJAH!
My personal opinion is I see this a more safe and protected way to receive money.
I'm unsure if that is true so don't take my word for it. I just feel that way.
Why?
For one, you are specifically invoicing someone. Not just giving your Paypal address to someone.
So, that person being invoiced is more conscience of what they are paying for.
They are "clicking" into something rather than typing the address in themselves.
PLUS, both parties know what specifically is being paid for.
There is less lee-way for mistakes and reporting you, the seller.
Secondly, this feature is available, as far as I know for any Paypal worldwide.
I believe it's payable via Paypal Mobile too (correct me if I am wrong).

Before we start creating invoices, let's go over a couple important settings.
IMPORTANT! Business Information
Very important! I found out about this setting after someone wondered how to remove your address from invoices.
The seller can remove their address upon other information in invoices;
HOWEVER, I see no function to give an option to customers to not state their address.
It's cool though, there is a way to deal with a customer's address issue later!
For those who don't understand the customer's address issue, continue reading.
It will be explained.

Logo
You can upload an icon that represents you or leave it blank. I recommend uploading a picture to make your invoices more personable. That way people can discern you and your invoices apart from other's invoices. First & Last Name You can erase this part! It won't show up at all in your invoices. I know some people are wary about their names being shown. Address You can choose not to show on invoice. Very essential if you're a Digital Artist in which your commodity is not physical. I feel the only reason to have an address shown is because you are a physical seller. |
Phone
You can choose not to show on invoice. I don't see a point of showing your phone number on your Invoices TBH. You can choose not to show on invoice. Personally, I prefer to have my email shown so people can contact me that way. Website I choose to disclose websites I am active in. It lets people know where I am and how to contact me if email is insufficient. Apply Information To: BE SURE TO SELECT "ALL TEMPLATES." Or else it'll show only on the default template selected there. |
One more pitstop in settings land before we create an invoice!
Select "Settings -> Templates."
Select "Settings -> Templates."
For the "Amount Only" template, select "Set as Default" under the drop-down menu.
It will save automatically and set it as the default.
This will save you an extra step when making invoices.
NOW WE ARE READY TO MAKE THEM! WOOHOO!

My Templates
Remember when we set "Amount Only" to default? Now everytime you create an invoice it will be "Amount Only." It helps get rid of necessary lines in the description area such as "Tax" and "Shipping and Handling." You can also see that our logo is appearing. You can update or remove it from this page too. Reference It's entirely optional to add something here. However, I like to add something to help me remember this transaction such as like "Jan17_HalfBody_C" meaning "In Jan 2017, I took a Halfbody Commission that is Colored." Bill To Self-explanatory. Input the address you are trying to bill! |
Description
Don't be afraid to be specific. You'll thank yourself later if someone wants a refund 5 months down the line or you need to do some bookkeeping. I found out being vague was just awful for tracing transactions with people especially if you are trying to resell an adoptable design! For example: "Digital Commission - Halfbody Colored - "Pin-Up Style" You can also break down options to a commission by pressing "Add Another Item Line" Amount Don't forget to input how much they need to pay. Add Memo To Self This portion will not show up on invoice. It's a note for you! I tend to add who I am sending it to and what website. For Example: "sonyaism @ TH" |
Okay! Now click either at the top or bottom "Preview."
Let's check out how are invoice looks before sending it out. : )

IMPORTANT! SHIPPING ADDRESS CRISIS
As mentioned before, I have not found a way to let customers/buyersselect "No Address" when they pay my invoices.
We have gone over how to opt out of showing our own, the seller's, addresses though.
There have been quite a few "Artist Alerts" going around with people leaving addresses in.
The story goes that people will open a dispute against Digital Artists that their item has not been shipped to them, the buyer.
What?
There is no physical item so how can you even?
But it's possible and people have won disputes against the artist despite their items being Digital Content.
This leaves Digital Artist a large hole in their pocket and wasted effort as they finished the artwork.
Here is how you solve the problem!
I learned this through the "Artist Alerts" that circulated around.
Find your transaction on your "Activity" or "Summary" page where the invoice as been paid
or someone who forgot to leave their address out of a transaction.

paypal.me
A pretty new and recent feature added to Paypal.
You get to pick a username for a link freely provided by Paypal.
Go and hurry to reserve one. lol
This is suppose to me a quick easy solution so no one has to do any typing of addresses.
Lass hassle, no mess-ups.
Only downfall, it seems Paypal Mobile is lacking in this feature
AND
it's not available for all countries, yet.
You get to pick a username for a link freely provided by Paypal.
Go and hurry to reserve one. lol

IF YOU ARE SELLING ART, ADOPTS, OR SOME FORM OF SERVICE,
PLEASE SET IT TO "GOODS AND SERVICES."
Yes, you will get fee'd. Yes, the buyer gets protection.
IT IS AGAINST PAYPAL'S TERMS OF SERVICE TO MAKE YOUR BUYER PAY THE PAYPAL TRANSACTION FEE.

There is just way too much info to write down.
I learned about buttons through kariosa-adopts. She had a wonderful tutorial on it.
She only went through one aspect however.
If you really must know about certain buttons, I am willing to learn with you.
Let me know!

Feel free to link to others to help you out.
Feel free to critique or give suggestions—even correcting me. I wanted just to make this for myself and my buyers.
I will have a link to a Toyhou.se Thread for critique.
